Okay, you got me. I didn’t actually FIND money today. I lost money today. Okay fine, I didn’t lose it, I LEFT it, but because of that I KNOW that somebody somewhere in the world today will be telling a friend, a family member, dog, co-worker and anybody else who will listen that THEY found money today! It will change their entire day. Their new mood will affect the people they come into contact with, and I don’t think it’s too lofty of a goal to hope that this single event could kick off a series of events that change their life!
Let’s face it, times are tough. And let me also note that I am not “rich”. I’m actually far from it, but I do know what it’s like to be SUPER broke. I also know what it’s like to feel that the universe is looking out for you, and that is the feeling I’m trying to give to whoever is lucky enough to find my little presents. As tough as times have been in my short life, they’re tough for everybody else out there as well. Imagine how good you would feel if you found money today. You’d be reading these words with a different internal tone.
Money is not everything, but finding it is pretty cool.
This blog is an experiment in giving; unconditional giving. We are going to be giving while receiving nothing in return; not even a thank you. Well, not from the person that found the money anyway. The “thank you” will be coming from a place that I think most people have forgotten exists. It will be coming from inside, so you’ll be the giver AND the recipient of the gratitude. People have been in survival mode for so long that they’ve forgotten what it feels like to have a little extra to spread around. Somebody found money, but you found something way more valuable; a good mood and maybe even a little bit more self esteem.
You will never know who found the money you left, and there’s always the possibility that the “wrong” person found it, but that’s irrelevant. We are here to give unconditionally. Everybody deserves to feel good, especially you. So don’t give until it hurts. Give until it feels good!

I had to give up my afternoon energy drink, and a morning coffee. I’m not gonna lie though, the charge I get off doing this is way better than the jolt you get from a Monster!

hey lizzie! i’m so glad you found us here. that’s a great thing neil’s got going there. it really challenges you to appreciate the little things. and i haven’t received any emails yet from people that found the left presents, but i’m sure i will. i think people might be a little scared that i’m going to want it back! haha

What a great idea. I found your site through a twitter search on “pay it forward”. Someone fixed my car for free today and said “Merry Christmas”. That made my day so I’m not brainstorming on a way that I can “pay it forward”. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

You can find him at http://www.pifexperience.org The Pay It Forward Experience. It’s quite remarkable what he is doing. But definitely keep in touch and let me know how your experiment goes! Try and document it if you can 🙂
love it. nothing makes you realize how lucky we are for everything we have (like sitting at a computer and being able to comment on a story like this) than putting yourself in other peoples shoes. everyone has ups and downs, together the ups are higher and the downs are manageable. no one person is more or less capable of building a better future for themselves and those we share this planet with. keep up the good work.
We’re all in this together, you’re absolutely right about that. I’m not sitting around waiting for $5 to fall into my lap just because I left money somewhere 🙂

Believe me, I’m not rich, but I feel taken care of enough to be able to do the same for others. I’m glad you made it here 🙂 You’re obviously proved you’re a survivor, now you can enjoy living.
Yes Indeed! A very true word written when you say that survival mode is a tough place to be – I now also feel that I am taken care of as you put it, and shall live 2012 accordingly 🙂

This reminds me of the pay for the person behind you in line activity that is going on. I love this idea. It also goes with Matthew 6:3 where you do not let anyone know what you are giving and the Lord rewards you.I work with the poor and have the opportunity to do this very often in ministry. The Lord does a great job of blessing my heart when I do this. Now that I found you I think I will vote at the Webby People’s Voice. Thank you for taking the time to put this idea on line.
I hate to sound like a skeptic, but this idea has a poor basis to it. I would prefer to give to charities and causes that I know will do something good with the cash, not just satisfy myself by dropping a few bucks on a bench for some rich son-of-a-b***h to pick up. It’s really quite pointless considering there are so many better ways to help people who you know are actually in need.
Well I do donate to causes that I believe in and want to align myself with, but this site is not about the “right” person getting the money they need. It’s about giving to the people of the world, unconditionally and without expectation of who is to find the money or what the money is to be used for.
To be quite honest, this site isn’t even about giving money or having money, it’s about the FEELING you get when you find money. It’s exciting. That’s what I was giving to people, not currency, but emotion and a memory.
I live in an area that i don’t fit in so if I was to leave money somewhere I would just be making the rich, richer so hopefully in my area one of the many many rich people will leave some money lying around for me
I feel your sentiment, but again, it’s not about giving the right person money or making sure the money goes to a good cause. The money is a symbol. The experience is finding it. I don’t care how much money you have, when you are coming down the street and you see that familiar green hue all alone on the ground and you know what it is, you get the feeling that the universe is taking care of you. Everybody could use a little more of that feeling in their lives.
This is really true. I was once working in a restaurant the financial district of Chicago, but I was flat broke to the point where I couldn’t make my bills or afford food outside of what I ate in that restaurant. Nearly everyone else working in that area were big wig executives making heaps of money, so I would have thought the same thing about making the rich richer…however one morning when I was walking to work at 5am I saw some money on the ground. I looked around to see if someone had dropped it, but there was no one there. I picked it up and it ended up being $100. Now, that’s not as big a deal to me, but at that point in my life $100 was the difference between making my bills and not making them, eating dinner or not. I was just in the first few weeks of that job, so had been waiting for my first check, so the bills had been piling up and the weight of it had been overwhelming. Finding that money made it so I could breathe again! Never underestimate the value of good karma!
I was kicking around the idea recently of mailing a $5 bill to a complete stranger I randomly picked out of the phone book every time I got paid, but I like your idea better! I’m going to start doing this this weekend and will post about it.

Good idea, I´m gonna replicate where I live, Peru. I´m not peruvian, but I live here for some years and I was thinking about how to help some very poor people when they are in the hospital. I thought of setting a website to receive donations and take the money directly to the door of the children´s public hospitals, where the empty pockets are turned inside out looking for the last coin, and the fathers sit to wait for an hour, then return to the child´s room and lie that they had breakfast. It is useless if someone like ONG´s, or corrupt governments steal the money, the good thing would be to give the money in hand to the persons who really need it. Your idea is good in the sense of good feelings that it generates, in both persons, the one who finds and the one who gives. Hey, there is good people in this blog! God bless you all. José
I have been leaving anonymous ‘love letters’ in random places everywhere I go (see http://www.moreloveletters.com) – and I have been throwing money in sometimes too – especially when I’m leaving the letters in areas that needy people might find the letters. It does feel good to know you can make a stranger’s day better!
